As we contemplate the referendum results, we will return to lecture rooms – UTAG to members

The University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) has asked its members to return to the lecture halls while its National Executive Committee (NEC) analyzes the outcome of a member poll on whether or not the strike, which has been ongoing for six weeks, should be postponed.
All UTAG branches around the country are holding referendums to determine whether or not they agree with NEC’s decision to stop the strike in response to a High Court ruling.

So far, about eight branches have voted against the strike suspension decision.
The UTAG’s NEC says otherwise,” according to a statement signed by UTAG President Prof. Solomon Nunoo.
Going back to the lecture halls to teach will be in line with the court’s ruling, according to UTAG, and will give the union time to negotiate with the employer on their terms of employment.
“This allows UTAG to comply with the present injunctive judgment from the Honourable High Court while still having room to negotiate with the Employer during the temporary suspension action,” according to the statement.
Meanwhile, the union says it has told its legal staff that it will take the required steps to resume its strike if the referendum results require it.

“This allows UTAG to comply with the present injunctive judgment from the Honourable High Court while still having room to negotiate with the Employer during the temporary suspension action,” according to the statement.
The union added that it was hopeful that its demands will be addressed within the short term of the strike’s suspension.
