18-year-old Galley Felix has been denied admission into Dzodze-penyi Senior High School after indications revealed he is a traditional priest. The JHS graduate was initiated as “Togbui Tueve Awunyo II” of Ative in Ketu North Municipality. He was told he would only be allowed into the school if he removed his religious cap, which he refused to do. Galley says he has been wearing the cap for 13 years and will not remove it unless he is forced to.
This follows a similar event at Achimota School in the Greater Accra Region where some two students were also denied admission because they had on dreadlocks, which according to the school goes against its rules and regulations.
The Ghana Education Service has instructed authorities of Achimota School to admit the two students. The headteacher of the school has said specific processes and codes of conduct are being followed by authorities of the School. The incident gained notice after the father of one of the students took to social media to narrate the unfairness meted out to his son.
