BoG Reports a 7.88% Drop in Registered Internet Banking Customers to 1.019 Million.

According to the 2020 Payments Systems Oversight Annual Report, the number of registered internet banking customers fell 7.88 percent from 1,106,270 in 2019 to 1,019,073 in 2020.

Registered mobile banking customers, on the other hand, increased by 12.30 percent, from 4,245,479 in 2019 to 4,767,719 in 2020.

According to the report, the value of internet banking transactions increased significantly by 101.50 percent to 24.21 billion in 2020, up from 12.01 billion in 2019.

However, the value of mobile banking transactions in 2020 was 12.94 billion, up from 6.69 billion in 2019, representing a 93.51 percent increase.

ATMs deployed by banks increase by 5.37%

Meanwhile, the number of ATMs deployed by banks as of the end of December 2020 was 2,237, representing a 5.37% increase over the previous year’s position of 2,123.

The number of POS terminals increased by 19.17%, rising from 8,802 at the end of December 2019 to 10,489 in December 2020.

Similarly, as of December 2020, the total number of debit cards issued by banks was 4,813,063—an increase of 8.70% from 4,427,848 cards in December 2019.

International scheme cards accounted for 65.83% of total issued debit cards (3,168,608), while bank proprietary cards accounted for 34.17% of total issued debit cards (1,644,455).

The international scheme and the banks’ proprietary cards grew by 11.53% and 3.63%, respectively.

In addition, the number of credit cards issued as of the end of December 2020 increased by 13.73%, from 29,050 in December 2019 to 33,039 in 2020.

The increase in credit cards issued was due to additional banks being authorized by the Bank of Ghana to issue credit cards. The credit cards that were issued were all international scheme cards.

Similarly, from 372,586 in 2019 to 573,703 at the end of December 2020, the total number of prepaid cards issued increased by 53.98%.
