Rafa Nadal began his quest for a record 21st Grand Slam championship by defeating American Marcos Giron 6-1 6-4 6-2 in the second round of the Australian Open on Monday.
With Djokovic deported by Australian authorities and Roger Federer missing, Nadal has a chance to break the men’s all-time Slam record by winning at Melbourne Park.

The lone former champion remaining in the draw, the Spanish great got off to a flying start at a sun-drenched Rod Laver Arena, breaking world number 66 Giron five times in the match and hammering the overwhelmed American with 34 winners.
For a spot in the third round, sixth seed Nadal will face the winner of the match between wildcard Thanasi Kokkinakis and qualifier Yannick Hanfmann.
