Ivory Coast: second country to receive COVAX vaccines

Ivory Coast receives 500,000 doses of a coronavirus vaccine from the COVAX initiative. The initiative was created to ensure that low- and middle-income countries have fair access to vaccines. WHO Africa: Some 24 other countries are expected to start receiving vaccines next week.

Ivory Coast has seen a second wave of the pandemic and has recorded 32,295 cases and 188 deaths since its first case was recorded in 2020.

The government says it will begin its vaccination campaign on Monday, targeting health personnel, security forces, teaching staff and others.

The first batch will target more than 250,000 people in Abidjan, where 95% of the country’s cases have been recorded.

The initiative has been hampered by the severely limited global supply of doses as well as logistical problems.
