What the analytics say about Tottenham vs. Southampton

Sports

Since a 2-1 setback at White Hart Lane in May 2016, Tottenham Hotspur have won their past five home Premier League matches against Southampton.

Although they drew 1-1 earlier this season, Southampton has lost 13 of their last 19 Premier League encounters against Spurs (W3 D3). Since 2003-04, they haven’t won both of their games against them in a season (W2).
Spurs have won seven of their first ten Premier League home games this season (D1 L2), only the second time in the last ten seasons that they have done so (they won eight in 2016-17 under Mauricio Pochettino).

Southampton has conceded 57 Premier League goals on the road since the start of 2021, 18 more than any other team. Saints have conceded three or more goals in 19 of their 60 away games (32%) under Ralph Hasenhüttl, with only Dave Jones (35%) having seen his teams surrender three or more goals in a larger percentage of away games in Premier League history (min. 50 away games).
Spurs haven’t played at home in the Premier League since beating Crystal Palace 3-0 on Boxing Day. This is the first time they’ve played a home league game in 2022, and it’s the first time they’ve done it since 1985, when they fell 2-1 to Manchester United in March.

Only Newcastle has dropped more points from winning situations in the Premier League this season than Southampton (21). After taking the lead, Saints have drawn five of their last seven league games (W2).
Antonio Conte has won 20 of his previous 21 home league matches as a manager, drawing the other 2-2 with Liverpool during his time with Inter Milan and Spurs. Only Peter Shreeves (first six games in 1984) and George Graham (first 11 games in 1998-99) have a better unbeaten home start as Spurs manager in the Premier League.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane has scored five goals in his previous three Premier League appearances against Southampton (11 goals, 6 assists). More goals have been scored against Southampton by Kane than any other player in Premier League history.
Tottenham have scored 20 of their previous 29 Premier League goals against Southampton, with Harry Kane (11) and Son Heung-Min (9) combining for six of them. After Alan Smith and Mark Viduka vs Charlton (6) and Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba vs Bolton (6), they are one of just three duos to score six goals against a club (7).

Nathan Redmond, a winger for Southampton, has assisted five Premier League goals this season, the most he’s had in a single season and the most of any Saints player. His previous eight assists, though, have all come at home, with his last one being away from home in July 2020 at Bournemouth.
