The Johnson & Johnson vaccine immunization campaign, which began this week in the Greater Accra Region, was set to finish today.

However, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) says the practice would continue until all of the authorized dosages have been used up.

Dr Franklin Asiedu Bekoe, the Director of Public Health at GHS, told JoyNews on Friday that despite the initial intention to exhaust the vaccinations in five days, they still had some vaccines to deliver.

“The plan was to create a campaign atmosphere and then exhaust it in five days, but it does not imply the exercise is over.

“Our objective is to use all of the vaccinations, so we aren’t set on when it will finish; as long as we have any vaccines remaining, we’ll keep going,” he promised.
He stated that the Ashanti Region may have utilized all of its vaccinations, but that the Greater Accra Region still has around 20% to be administered by the end of Monday.

“This Johnson & Johnson contract will end in 2023, so there will be no pressure to have people vaccinated,” he said, adding that “when individuals arrive, we will vaccinate them.”

Meanwhile, in response to worries about over-vaccination shortages in some regions, he stated that AstraZeneca will be arriving shortly.

However, the focus will be on people who had the initial jab in March, so those who were provided were urged to avoid the J&J immunization exercise.

As a result, he is sure that by the time the J&J vaccinations are finished, the AstraZeneca vaccines will be ready for the second dose immunization.
