For some persons, the following may be helpful in alleviating herpes symptoms:
- smearing cornstarch all over the afflicted region
- urinating while squirting water from a bottle onto blisters to relieve pain
- aloe vera gel applied to sores
However, there is no evidence that these therapies work.
Another option is to try:
- taking a pain reliever such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen
- relaxing in a warm sitz bath or bathing in mildly salted water
- petroleum jelly should be applied to the afflicted regions.
- To avoid irritation, use loose clothing.
- avoiding sexual activity, even if protected, until symptoms have subsided
- applying a lidocaine-containing cream or lotion on the urethra prior to urination
- Some folks find that ice packs are beneficial. Wrap the ice in a handkerchief before applying it to the skin.
