Genital herpes Part 5 (Treatment cont’d)

Health Tips

For some persons, the following may be helpful in alleviating herpes symptoms:

  • smearing cornstarch all over the afflicted region
  • urinating while squirting water from a bottle onto blisters to relieve pain
  • aloe vera gel applied to sores

However, there is no evidence that these therapies work.

Another option is to try:

  • taking a pain reliever such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen
  • relaxing in a warm sitz bath or bathing in mildly salted water
  • petroleum jelly should be applied to the afflicted regions.
  • To avoid irritation, use loose clothing.
  • avoiding sexual activity, even if protected, until symptoms have subsided
  • applying a lidocaine-containing cream or lotion on the urethra prior to urination
  • Some folks find that ice packs are beneficial. Wrap the ice in a handkerchief before applying it to the skin.
